Bikes Formerly Loved by Martin von Wyss

1996 Moto Guzzi 1100 Sport
Previously owned by Sam Stoney, my former sidecar racing partner. Click for more pictures. Great fun for sport touring, track days, pulling heavy farm equipment.

2000 Aprilia Pegaso

Great city bike --- light, maneuverable, loves leaping potholes.

Photo by Mike Peavey at about 50mph.

1978 Moto Morini 3 1/2

1978 Moto Guzzi Le Mans
I bought a gorgeous Le Mans in August of 1997. It had only 5,500 miles on it at the time. Unfortunately I didn't manage to put even 10,000 miles on it before I stuffed it in a bend in a nice country road in Nova Scotia in July of 1999. View more pictures of my beloved lost friend or have a look at our test rider putting the bike through the paces on the test track.

1978 BMW R80/7
Martin had a BMW that he rode back to Massachusetts from San Francisco. It was the 1970's version of the basic horizontally-opposed twin cylinder engine design BMW has been building since the 1930s.

1986 BMW K100
The K100 is a monstrous, top-heavy beast that was much too much for my tastes. We recommend the lighter and nimbler K75 instead. The BMW K series was a line of motorcycles introduced by BMW in the early 80s; the basic engine design was for four inline cylinders (in the 1000cc version) and three cylinders for the 750cc K75.

1974 Yamaha RD 350
This is a beat-up but fun Yamaha RD350 Martin had the pleasure to own. They're great bikes: light, powerful and extremely maneuverable.

1976 BMW R60/7
This was Martin's first BMW, a beautiful but slow Bavarian boxer. "The Sedan" was very well behaved. Bits of the cylinder heads can be found all over Marin and Mendocino counties.

1970 Honda 750/Four
The first mass-produced super bike, this four-cylinder four-stroke Honda refused to stop running despite Martin's shameless neglect. Only riding in the rain with the points completely exposed to the elements when one cylinder had already blown made him pull into the break-down lane. En route to a New Year's Eve party 600 miles away, the bike survived a six-foot fall over the rider into a swampy riverbed. Martin managed to catch half of the opening band's set, thanks to the helpful local sheep farmers who helped push the bike back onto the road. All in a day's touring....

Honda Passport
A 70cc monster. Centrifugal clutch, 3 speeds, and plenty of opportunities to explain that under Michigan law it is NOT a moped. But no one believed me.
